Overview

The World Disability Billiards and Snooker (WDBS) in the UK, focusing on supporting disabled players and aiming to reintegrate disabled snooker into the Paralympics, highlighted an innovation opportunity. After reaching out to WDBS and being inspired by discussions, an improvement in existing snooker aids was identified. 'Pro-bridge,' a detachable prosthesis for one-armed snooker players, was developed, addressing various degrees of single-arm disabilities and multiple snooker cueing scenarios. Testing with single-arm individuals ensured the design met diverse needs. This innovation is a significant step towards positively impacting the world of disabled snooker, offering a versatile solution to enhance accessibility and playability.

I am a snooker enthusiast and by chance I came across a WDBS (World Disability Billiards and Snooker) organisation in the UK who hold regular events to help disabled people play snooker and work to bring disabled snooker back into the Paralympic Games. After looking at their website I found that there were some problems with some of their existing aids to help people with disabilities play snooker and there was room for improvement, so I tried to contact them and after talking to them I thought I could design a prosthetic arm to help people with disabilities play snooker better.

My touches with snooker

In 2005, after Ding Junhui won the China Open and Snooker UK Championships, this sport became extremely popular in China in a short period.

In 2011, the World Snooker Championship was the first time that I start to watch snooker games, and I was attracted by the beauty of this sport. After that, I joined this sport and snooker has become one of my hobbies.

In 2022, four Chinese snooker players participated in the world snooker championship including Zhao, Ding, Yan, and Fan.

At the same time, I noticed a piece of news on the Internet related to disabled snooker players and the World Disability Billiards and Snooker Association. I first realised many disabled people are interested in this sport, therefore I did some research related to disabled snooker.

World disablity billiards and snooker

World Disability Billiards and Snooker (WDBS) was founded in 2015 to give more people with disabilities the opportunity to play cue sports around the world.
Since its formation WDBS has regularly staged several snooker events for people with disabilities across the UK and beyond. Typically ran over three days, events include a mix of open days at which anyone with a disability is encouraged to attend and try snooker, as well as competitive tournaments.
The long-term aspiration of WDBS is to help return snooker to the Paralympics Games for the first time since 1988.
The founding time of this organization is relatively late compared with other disabled sports. Due to the immaturity, there are truly some problems that existed in the development of assisted instruments for disabled snooker according to my findings in the following stage.
